Truck Dispatcher Salary 2026: What Dispatchers Really Make (W-2 vs Independent)

How much a truck dispatcher makes depends on one decision: whether you work for a company or for yourself. Company dispatchers earn a salary that tops out in the high five figures. Independent dispatchers earn a fee on every truck they keep loaded, so their income has no ceiling, and no floor.

Here are the real numbers for both, and what moves them.

Company (W-2) truck dispatcher salary

Source What it measures Pay
Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025) Dispatchers, except police, fire & ambulance (all industries) $50,340 median · $36,030 (10th pct) to $78,140 (90th pct)
PayScale (2026) Truck dispatchers specifically ~$50,000 median · roughly $29,000 to $65,000

The BLS category covers every kind of non-emergency dispatcher, from trucking to towing to utilities, so treat it as a ballpark. What it tells you: a typical company dispatcher earns around $50,000 a year, entry-level pay starts in the $30Ks, and experienced fleet dispatchers can reach the $70Ks.

Many carriers add bonuses on top of base pay, tied to trucks managed, loads booked, or revenue per mile. When comparing offers, also weigh health insurance, paid time off and whether the job can go remote after training.

Independent truck dispatcher income

Independent dispatchers aren't paid a salary. They charge owner-operators and small fleets a fee, usually 5–10% of each load's gross (often 6–7% for dry van and reefer, more for flatbed and box trucks), or a flat weekly fee per truck.

Here's the math at 7% on a dry van truck grossing about $5,500 a week:

Trucks dispatched Your fees / week Per year (52 weeks)
1 $385 $20,020
3 $1,155 $60,060
5 $1,925 $100,100
10 $3,850 $200,200

These are gross fees, before your load board, phone, software, insurance and taxes, and they assume every truck runs every week. In real life, trucks break down, drivers take home time, and some clients leave. Most new independent dispatchers take several months to build to 3–5 trucks.

BOX TRUCKS PAY LESS PER TRUCK

A box truck might gross $2,500–$3,500 a week. Even at a 10% fee, that's about $250–$350 a week per truck, so box truck dispatchers need more trucks to reach the same income.

What moves a dispatcher's pay

  • Equipment. Flatbed, reefer and specialized freight usually pay more than dry van and box truck, and dispatchers often charge a higher percentage on them.
  • Number of trucks. For independents, this is everything. One dispatcher can usually handle 8–15 trucks well, depending on the freight.
  • The freight market. When spot rates fall, a percentage-based fee falls with them.
  • Your rate per mile. A dispatcher who books $0.30 a mile more than average earns more for the carrier and keeps clients longer. Know each truck's break-even with our cost per mile calculator.
  • Retention. Owner-operators who make money stay. Ones who don't, leave, and replacing them costs you weeks.

W-2 or independent: which pays more?

Company dispatcher Independent dispatcher
Typical income ~$36K–$78K salary $0 to six figures, by truck count
Startup cost None A few hundred to a few thousand dollars
Risk Low: the company carries it High: clients, collections, reputation
Benefits Often health insurance, PTO None unless you buy them
Work from home Sometimes, often after training Yes, fully

Many of the best independent dispatchers start on a W-2 for a year, learning lanes, brokers and problem-solving on someone else's dime, then go out on their own.

Frequently asked questions

How much do truck dispatchers make an hour?

A $50,000 salary works out to roughly $24 an hour on a 40-hour week. Entry-level hourly roles often start lower.

Can a truck dispatcher make $100K a year?

Yes, mostly as an independent. At 7% on dry van trucks grossing about $5,500 a week, it takes about 5 trucks running steadily to reach $100,000 in fees before expenses.

How much do freight dispatchers make per load?

Independents typically earn 5–10% of the load. On a $2,000 load at 7%, that's $140.

Do dispatchers make more than truck drivers?

Company dispatchers and company drivers earn in a similar range. Independent dispatchers with several trucks can earn more, without the time away from home.

Is truck dispatching a good career?

For organized people who are good on the phone and comfortable with numbers, yes. It's also the most common stepping stone into freight brokering. See what freight brokers make.
